How do you define Indigenous?

We work in accordance with the working terms that the United Nation’s have identified as what it means to be Indigenous:

• Self- identification as Indigenous peoples at the individual level and accepted by the community as their member.

• Historical continuity with pre-colonial and/or pre-settler societies

• Strong link to territories and surrounding natural resources

• Distinct social, economic or political systems

• Distinct language, culture and beliefs

• Form non-dominant groups of society

• Resolve to maintain and reproduce their ancestral environments and systems as distinctive peoples and communities.

What’s the difference between First Nations, First Peoples, and Indigenous?

We encourage everyone to self identify, and acknowledge that these terms are imperfect and imposed language. In the context of our work, as settlers in Aotearoa and on Bibbulum Country, Studio Kiin use the terms First Nations, First Peoples or Tagata Whenua to refer to those peoples who are First Peoples of the lands we currently work on. We use the term Indigenous to identify our team’s ongoing relations with our own homelands and peoples.

Do all of your kin identify as Indigenous?

Not, not all of our kiin identify as Indigenous.

Do you subscribe to the POC, BIPOC, or CALD* acronyms?

Studio Kiin does not subscribe to these acronyms as we believe they tie communities with varied lived experiences and cultural expressions by oppression and phenotypical features rather than shared values and historical kinship which is the foundation of our work. However, we understand that arts institutions, government organisations, funding grants and philanthropists use these acronyms when identifying the communities and creatives we work with. We also acknowledge that some people do align with these acronyms and we bear no judgement upon that. Because of this, where we feel it is necessary - we may use these terms to communicate a project’s target audience.

*POC = Person of Colour, BIPOC = Black, Indigenous or Person of Colour, CALD = Culturally and Linguistically Diverse.

Do you work on creative projects relating to Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander or Maori story sovereignty?

Our answer to this is circumstantial. As we have First Nations collective members, if we are approach (or we approach) a creative or organisation from these communities, Yes - we would love to explore transindigenous collaboration! We do love to support First Nations collective members to apply for targeted funding, however, we do not apply for First Nations funding as a collective, nor do we accept enquiries to consult on or lead projects for First Nations projects from non-First Nations creatives or organisations.

Let us help you create in a way that's right for you.
